Eating Places in Bedford and Beyond

Page history last edited by Richard Gillard 6 mos ago

Add your favourite eating places here (and the ones that you would never touch with a fork) and why......

The Dragon Oriental Restaurant - Chinese (River Street):

The Dragon Oriental Restaurant is nice for a buffet if you want a relatively cheap meal with a friend or two.  It is a help yourself buffet which is slightly more expansive and expensive in the evening.  You need to collect and pay for your drinks from the bar.  A waiter will clear your plates but you serve yourself.  Atmospherically it is huge and so you tend to disappear in the crowd.  Some vegetarian fare and it is labelled.  Food is OK and you can really fill up.

If you do not know where River Street is, it is the continuation of Greyfriars (the road which runs past Bedford Buss Station).  Greyfriars terminates at the junction with Midland Road.  If you continue past the Midland Road junction you will find yourself in River Street.  River Street runs down to the junction with Horne Lane and Commercial Road, at which point it terminates, shortly before the banks of The River Great Ouse.  The Salvation Army's Community Hall car park is also at the southern end of River Street.

The Golden Palace - Chinese (Midland Road):

The Golden Palace restaurant is a buffet style at lunch time, with a good range.  Different styles to the place above and a better range of 'puddings'.

The China Palace Restaurant:

The China Palace Restaurant is situated at 12 Lime Street, Bedford, MK40 1JU.  This restaurant provides an excellent Chinese Buffet.  The down side is that the cost varies.  It is most expensive during evenings and weekends.  However, for week day lunches it is very good value indeed.

The Telephone number of the China Palace Restaurant is 01234 330 888.  They are open 7 days a week.  Opening times are: Lunch times: 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM, Evenings: 5:30 PM to 11 PM.

The Harvester

The Harverter, near the Goldington Tesco, Wicks and Homebase, does a good deal if you eat before 18:30 on a weekday and 17:30 on a Saturday.  They offer a 1/3rd off menu for a variety of items and a salad is included.  Don't be tempted to take too much salad as the main course can be substantial.  If it is the 'end of the month' they do provided a jug of iced water

The Bedford Swan Hotel

By the Town Bridge, on the Banks of The River Great Ouse, this fine hotel provides an excellent value Sunday lunch.  You can enjoy a Sunday roast, with all the trimmings, you can eat in lovely surroundings and you can do all this for less than £10.

The Park Inn Hotel (Bedford)

Every Sunday, there is a very good value carvery at this hotel.  Once again, you can enjoy a very fine meal for less than £10.  What is more, if you choose a table near the window, you will be able to look down on a lovely riverside view as you eat.

Four

Located at 4 Kimbolton Road, this restaurant is the ideal place for a celebration or a slap up meal.  The food is excellent, as is the decor, the service and the background music.  The restaurant is not cheap, but it is well worth the money, especially if you are planning a celebration.

The food is Italian.  The peppered steaks are excellent.

You will need to book.  Even on a weekday this restuarant is very popular.

The Orchid Bay - Thai Restaurant

Located in the Broadway, which runs between the junction joining the top of Harpur Street to Tavistock Street, and the Bunyan Statue, this restaurant provides excellent food at down to earth prices.  The Thai Red Curry and the Massaman curry are particularly recommended.
